\nAnd these are things that should\u2019ve been taught to us as kids. But instead, we were asked to make a career decision at 16 after consulting with our families.<\/p>\n

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how you crush the dreams of teenagers.
\nBy asking them to make such a huge decision when they haven\u2019t even understood their hormones yet. And now you\u2019re at this stage realising that you have no idea what career you want.<\/p>\n

This post will explore 10 ways to help you figure this out.<\/p>\n

10 Things to Do When You Have No Idea What Career You Want<\/h2>\n

1. Figure out who you are<\/h2>\n

To understand which career path will fit you best, you must first understand yourself.
\nAnd this is something most of us didn\u2019t do in our late teens. Your personality and the things that interest you are the last things you worry about at that age.<\/p>\n

But you must understand your personality. Many recommend personality tests to help you with this, but you know yourself best
\nSpend time alone with a journal and write down all the things that make you YOU
\nFigure out if you\u2019re an introvert, extrovert, or ambivert, as this will also make a difference in how happy you are at your job.<\/p>\n

An extrovert sitting in a quiet office and an introvert talking to customers every hour is a disaster bound to happen.<\/p>\n

Next, understand what you\u2019re naturally inclined to.<\/p>\n

For example, if you love number subjects like accounting or mathematics, then maybe a career that involves those subjects would suit you.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re an outdoorsy person and love to work with your hands, then maybe a career in landscaping would suit you.<\/p>\n

Understand your strengths and weaknesses; You might not believe that you have strengths, or you might think that your strengths are useless, but they\u2019re not. Your unique strengths can provide a meaningful career for you. For example, if you are a calm person \u2013 then working in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment might suit you.<\/p>\n

And just as you have strengths, you must recognize your weaknesses too. There are things you\u2019re truly horrible at. When you understand who you are, it\u2019s easy to narrow down career options that align with you.<\/p>\n

2. What is your definition of work success and happiness?<\/h2>\n

Money might be the most motivating factor for many people when it comes to choosing a career.<\/p>\n

People respect and value those with high-paying jobs. And parents want their kids to be in those ranks too.<\/p>\n

So why are so many people \u201cstarving artists\u201d or entrepreneurs who live and breathe for a business that has yet to pull a profit?<\/p>\n

Because everybody has a different definition of work success and happiness. Not everyone defines stability and financial security as success. Create your own definition of work success and happiness. Deciding on a career path then becomes easy.
\nDo you want to make a positive impact on the environment in your work?
\nDo you want to work remotely so you can spend as much time as possible at home?
\nDo you want to work on the 25th floor of a corporate office?
\nWould taking the elevator to the top make you happy?<\/p>\n

Understand what is meaningful to you, and this will define success for YOU.
\nIt could even be that salary. There\u2019s nothing wrong with a high salary genuinely making you happy.
\nBut if it doesn\u2019t, then don\u2019t go into a career where there is only money to be made and nothing else.<\/p>\n

3. Look at job descriptions<\/h2>\n

A great way to figure out the type of career you want is to look at different job descriptions. Search for jobs in sectors that you think you might be interested in. Or you can specifically search by the job title.<\/p>\n

For example, \u201cJobs in environmental management,\u201d \u201cJobs in Digital marketing ,\u201d or \u201cCopywriter positions,\u201d etc. Also, be realistic when you are looking at a job description.<\/p>\n

Sometimes things only look good in theory. But when you \u201cactually\u201d picture yourself doing those things every day, it doesn\u2019t look appealing anymore.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why the next tip is so important.<\/p>\n

4. Gain practical experience<\/h2>\n

I find it ridiculous how we\u2019re told to make career decisions in school\/college when we haven\u2019t worked a day in that career.
\nExactly what are you using to decide?<\/p>\n

Your father\u2019s advice? A website? You can\u2019t decide if you\u2019ll be happy with someone until you both meet and spend time getting to know each other, the same goes for a career.<\/p>\n

The only way to determine whether a career is a suitable fit for you is to actually do it.
\nObtain practical, real-world experience in that role. And you can accomplish this through volunteering, interning, or job shadowing<\/p>\n

5. Forget what everyone else says<\/h2>\n

Everyone will advise you on what to do when it comes to picking a career.<\/p>\n

However, giving counsel is cheap since the giver is exempt from having to deal with its repercussions. People you care about will also advise you, like your parents, aunts, and uncles. These folks genuinely care about you and want the best for you; however, their voices can silence the voice within you.
\nSo, listen to what everyone says and then let it out the other ear. ( in other words , filter the advice and pick the one that\u2019s beneficial to you )<\/p>\n

Your career path should be decided by you and nobody else.<\/p>\n

6. Listen to yourself<\/h2>\n

There is a voice within you, and it\u2019s called intuition or gut instinct.
\nTo find out what your instinct is telling you, check at job descriptions.
\nAlternatively, you can follow the suggestions made by others and pay attention to how they make you feel.<\/p>\n

In addition, you might investigate several career options and analyse your gut reaction.
\nIs it yelling out of terror or is it singing out of joy?<\/p>\n

Listen and act accordingly<\/p>\n

7. Remove your blinkers<\/h2>\n

Because you have such a limited perspective on careers, you only consider \u201ctraditional\u201d paths or what is expected of you.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t roll your eyes. It\u2019s a good question. Is there something you\u2019d like to do despite knowing you\u2019ll never get paid enough for it? If you were asked as a kid this same question \u201cWhat career would you love to do if money weren\u2019t an issue?\u201d\u00a0 your answer wouldn\u2019t be so far-fetched, but you\u00a0 didn\u2019t have the confidence to go after it.
\nSo, like many, we went the traditional route and forgot about that answer. Ask yourself what job feels spiritually rewarding to you and go back to your definition of work success. If money isn\u2019t in your definition, then what\u2019s holding you back from going after your dream?<\/p>\n

9. Choose your struggle<\/h2>\n

Wishing for a struggle-free life is pointless. Because nothing will ever be struggle-free.
\nThe same goes for a career \u2013 every career or job is going to be a struggle. You\u2019ll never have the perfect one.
\nSo, look at your options and choose the one that\u2019s worth suffering for. Choose the one that will still make you feel fulfilled and satisfied when you come home very tired.<\/p>\n

10. Be patient and enjoy the journey<\/h2>\n

Not knowing what career you want, It\u2019s not the end of the world . It\u2019s a very normal problem, and you will figure things out. The career you choose doesn\u2019t have to be \u201cThe One.\u201d Every job you work doesn\u2019t need to be \u201cThe One.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t waste so much time and energy trying to perfectly sort everything in your life. You change as a person with time, your career interests will change with time too. So, don\u2019t bank everything on figuring out what you want to do now.<\/p>\n

Just be patient. Try new things.<\/p>\n
